Marc Guehi’s perfect Liverpool shirt number vacant after £27m star’s exit

Liverpool will have conversations with Crystal Palace and the representatives of Marc Guehi in an attempt to land the highly valued defender, whose preferred shirt number is currently empty on Anfield

Marc Guehi could be set to get his favorite shirt number in Liverpool if they are successful in their pursuit of the Crystal Palace Captain. The Reds hope to make the central defender their seventh new arrival of the summer after a busy start of the transfer window.

The Premier League champions have already drawn a looting Wing-back Jeremie Frimpong, creative midfielder Florian Wirtz, left back Milos Kerkez and goalkeepers Giorgi Mhamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman. They are now closing a movement for Guehi, who has left for another year at his palace contract.

Guehi has been associated with various Premier League parties, because it became clear that the International of England will not extend his contract in Selhurst Park.

But Mirror Football understands that Liverpool are the front runners to secure his signature, with conversations between all relevant parties that take place this weekend.

However, the deal has still not been agreed. Palace appreciates their center back for £ 70 million, and it is unlikely that the Reds will match that with only 12 months left over.

And Guehi will still have to be convinced that he will be an ordinary starter, with Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk that offers strong competition.

Yet they can at least offer him his desired shirt number – no. 6 – that is currently not worn by anyone in the team.

Guehi has worn the song since he signed for Palace in 2021/22, although in the past he has a history of embracing different figures after he had worn no. 5 and 2 in Swansea City, as well as No. 4, 44, 53 and 16 in his youth team days.

The No. 6 in Liverpool has been empty since Thiago Alcantara, who signed £ 27 million in 2020 in 2020, left last summer to retire at the end of his contract, only 33 years old. Prior to Thiago, the like Dejan Lovren, Fabio Aurelio and John Arne Riise had the sweater.

Guehi's signing would take the total summer spending of Liverpool, including money for add-ons, to the £ 250 million. Sports director Richard Hughes and Arne Slot have definitely acted so far and acknowledge the need to renew the team.

Last summer the newly named head coach Slot saw only one outfield player signing – Federico Chiesa – who gave him a whole season to assess which parts of his team needed further attention.

It was a huge bonus that he won the competition comfortably in his first campaign in England, with the Reds now showing their intention through the transfer market.

The arrival of Guehi would also represent a large coup, given its international pedigree and the interest of Newcastle and Tottenham.

Palace is expected to hold a reimbursement of at least £ 40 million, especially since Chelsea has a 20 percent clause when they sold Guehi for £ 18 million in 2021.
