Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is concerned about the lack of peace, his side will lead the new Premier League season and said that their involvement at the World Cup club could “destroy” them.
City closed the previous Premier League season on 25 May and opened their club World Cup campaign in Philadelphia just over three weeks later on June 18.
They will be confronted on Tuesday with all Hilal in Orlando in the round of 16 and if City would reach the final on July 13, they have a month to prepare for their new competition campaign that starts on August 16.
Guardiola said he did not know how much the Club World Cup would get out of his team and told reporters to ask him for the impact later in the year.
“I can say, so listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup has destroyed us,” he added.
“I don't know, but it's the first time in our lives that it happened. So we'll see.”
Guardiola said he understood comments from the former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said that the extensive event of 32 teams, which was held once every four years during the preseason, was the worst idea of football.
“Jurgen, we fought many, many times together … When we mainly went to UEFA meetings, or when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality, to give the managers and players more rest,” said Guardiola.
“So his comments didn't surprise me much … I understand his argument, because I would also defend his argument.”
