Match report
The Galaxy took the lead with two goals inside 13 minutes as they made a blistering start on home soil at Dignity Health Sports Park, and they held on after the Red Bulls halved the deficit midway through the first half.
Gaston Brugman sent a nice through ball into the path of Paintsil, who scored his finish under Carlos Coronel for an opener in the ninth minute.
Four minutes later, Greg Vanney's men were given breathing space when Joveljic broke free from the Red Bulls' backline and pushed home with the outside of his boot.
Daniel Edelman narrowly avoided going through his own net shortly afterwards, before New York hit one back through captain Sean Nealis, who hammered home after an inswinging corner from Emil Forsberg.
Noah Eile missed one glorious chance before setting another up for Dante Vanzeir, but the Galaxy held on and almost scored a third goal when Miki Yamane fired a shot against the post shortly after the hour mark.
