Sergio Ramos delivers his verdict on Monterrey’s Club World Cup campaign – and Mexican soccer as a whole

Sergio Ramos and Monterrey may have bent from the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, but their performance left a strong impression on the world stage. The Spanish defender, a recent addition to Rayados, acknowledged the growing form of Mexican football – and called it similar to the world's best competitions.

After the loss of Monterrey's Round-of-16 for Borussia Dortmund, Ramos emphasized the quality of the Liga MX and emphasized that those who really understand the game already recognize their value.

“The quality is there”

“Mexican football is growing steadily, with talent and projection that is comparable to the big competitions,” said Ramos. “But change does not happen from one day to the next – it takes time and the Liga MX is in that process.”

He added: “People who know the game – who have seen players from our competition successful in Spain, the Premier League, the Bundesliga – they know that the quality is there. It doesn't have to be sold. Everyone with a little football knowledge can see it.”

“We are walking away with our heads held high”

Ramos came to Monterrey earlier this year. While the domestic campaign was inconsistent – which led to the resignation of head coach Martín Demichelis – the club World Cup told a different story.

Rayados was unbeaten in the group stage, drawing with Inter Milan and River Plate and the beating of Urawa Red Diamonds. Even in the loss against Dortmund, they dominated possession and insisted on victory. Ramos said that the team proudly leaves the tournament.

“Fans and those who understand the game saw a team that gave everything – heart, soul and effort,” he said. “Sometimes football goes in your way, sometimes not. We have suffered a heavy loss, but we are walking away with our heads high, proud of how we played from start to finish.”

Monterrey now returns to Nuevo León to prepare at the start of the Liga MX Apertura 2025 Tournament and their upcoming participation in the Leagues Cup.
