Barcelona must be busy on the transfer market if they are able to complete all their desired signing at the beginning of September. Joan Garcia has already become a member, and the hope is that Nico Williams will follow – but in recent days there have been complications because of the uncertainty about whether he can be registered by the end of the summer.
Williams and his agent want guarantees that he will be registered before the start of the 2025-26 season in August, but to happen, Barcelona must move first team players. If they do that, they have the salary space needed to register it at La Liga.
A number of candidates have emerged, such as Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Andreas Christensen. And according to sport, the latter could be the difference between whether Williams can be registered.
Barcelona is overbooked in central defense, with Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Ronald Araujo, Christensen and Eric Garcia as options in that area. Sports director Deco recently hinted that one of them will be sold this summer, and the Dane is the favorite candidate – mainly because of his contract situation.
Christensen has a high salary due to arrival as a free agent in 2022, and without plans for him to be offered an extension, Barcelona now wants to lose. But he does not want to leave this summer, who has thrown a key in the works of Deco's plans.
If Christensen would leave, Barcelona would be on its way to create the salary space that is needed to register Williams – and also Garcia. There is interest in his services, but unless he changes his mind, it is difficult to see him leave the club this summer.
