Arsenal agree to terminate star’s contract despite Arteta’s ‘incredible’ claim

Arsenal was without Takehiro Tomiyasu for the overwhelming majority of last season because he sustained two separate knee injuries and now the defender has agreed to leave

Arsenal Defender Takehiro Tomiyasu will leave the club after an agreement has been reached to terminate his contract. Tomiyasu, 26, played only six minutes of football after knee operation in 2023 last season.

The defender is expected to be excluded for five months after a new operation in February. The current Tomiyasu deal will end at the end of next season, but he will leave the Emirates early.

BBC Sport Report that Arsenal and Tomiyasu have reached an agreement to end his contract with immediate effect. In 2021, the Japanese international came to Arsenal on Italian side Bologna for £ 16 million plus potential add-ons after taking rivals Tottenham.

Tomiyasu will be up to a number of defenders to leave the Gunners this summer. Kieran Tierney has already reached a free transfer, while Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior are both linked to movements to AC Milan.

Mikel Arteta wants to have new options in the defense, whereby Valencia Center-Back Crithian Mosquera recently appears as a top goal. Arsenal reportedly rejected an unknown bid worth £ 17.3 million by the Spanish side last week.

Tomiyasu's versatility made him an asset to Arteta, who loves defenders who can play both centrally and broadly. The Japanese played the majority of his football in Arsenal as a right back.

But he has never made more than 31 performances in one of his four seasons with the North Londers, while he had difficulty staying injury -free. Tomiyasu only played this period for six minutes when Arsenal met Southampton against Southampton in October 2024.

“Unfortunately it will keep him out for a long period of time and it is very sad because he is a player who lives for the game, he is really, very much likes to play and be consistent. When he is at his level, he is an incredible player for us.”
