Liverpool -players gathered on Saturday in the small Portuguese city of Gondomar for the funeral of their English Premier League -football teammate Diogo Jota, who died on Thursday with his younger brother in a car accident in Spain.
Club captain Virgil van Dijk, goalkeeper Cooimhin Kelleher and manager Arne Slot were a thing of the past and present of teammates who arrived in Portugal on Friday to express their respect to the striker and his brother, Andre Silva.
They are expected to become a member of the grieving family and hundreds of inhabitants of Gondomar, a small town in the north of Portugal where Jota grew up, for the funeral in the Igreja Matriz -Church.
Rute Cardoso, who married Jota only a few weeks ago, is expected to be accompanied by the three young children of the couple.
Jota's death at the age of 28 sent shock waves through the world of football and beyond, with messages from condolences that flow in from national leaders and in sport.
The brothers were supposed to drive to a ferry in Spain to travel to Groot -Britain when their Lamborghini walked off the road and burst into flames after midnight on Thursday. The police said they suspected there was a bond burst.
