Aussie who made history when he came out as gay reveals his huge life change

A -League star Josh Cavallo has revealed that he is moving to the United Kingdom with his fiancé -but his sporting future remains unknown.

Cavallo, 25, rose to international fame in 2021 when he became the first openly gay-male football player who actively played in a top class.

At the time, the Adelaide United defender stated that he did not want to be ashamed of his sexuality and was exhausted after trying to live a 'double life'.

Cavallo went to Instagram on Monday and told his 1.1 million followers that he is looking forward to living in England.

“It's not forever farewell, but now it's time to leave the nest with my fiancĂ© by my side,” his post started.

'Football and life have taken me further than I had ever thought, and new opportunities have led a new life to be waiting for us all over the world.

'I never thought that the life of my truth would unlock doors of the field to every corner of my personal life.

'Whether you have followed my journey from the start whether it has found strength in it, your presence has meant more than words can ever say.

'Especially for the LGBTQ+ community, you are the reason I have never given it up.

'You helped me to see that I was not alone and that none of us is. For the boy who once looked in the mirror and wondered why he was different, this is proof that you can find your place in this world. '

The first professional player who still came out while playing was Justin Fashanu of Great -Britain in 1990, but he never found acceptance in the game and tragically took his own life in 1998.

After making his announcement, Cavallo received support on social media from people such as Matildas-Schipper Sam Kerr, ex-Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and former English striker Gary Lineker.

He also labeled the support of Adelaide United teammates and officials 'immense', before he added that he wanted to become a positive role model for gay football players.

“It's okay to be gay and play football – I want to show all the other people who are struggling and scared,” said Cavallo.

The left side came through the youth ranks in Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City before he secured an A-League relocation to Western United in 2019.

He played 10 games for Green and Black before signing a short contract with Adelaide United in 2021.

In May, Adelaide United confirmed that Cavallo left the club and labeled their former star a 'symbol of courage, authenticity and positive change'.

Daily Mail Australia reached for Cavallo and Wax – who manage the athlete – with regard to possible football options abroad.
