Shortly before the start of the public training on Wednesday, VFB Stuttgart signed a new signature. Lazar Jovanovic is moving from Serbian record champions Red Star Belgrade to the Cannstatt -based club. The 18-year-old attacker will participate in VFB at the start of the preseason, signed a contract until 30 June 2029 and bears the number 45 sweater.
Lazar Jovanovic, who has successfully completed its medical medical in the Cannstatt club, says: “I am really looking forward to my time at VFB. Lazar Jovanovic is the third new signing of VFB for the 2025/2026 season. An exciting time is ahead, for which the Serbian has prepared well.
During the photo shoot he was immediately fascinated by the ball. “Is this the Bundesliga competition ball?” Lazar Jovanovic asks when he sees the ball – and is happy with the affirming nod of the cameraman. Lazar, a warm welcome at VFB. For the first time you wear the new VFB sweater for the photo shoot. How do you like it?
Lazar Jovanovic: “I love the sweater – it's classic and stylish. I love the design and, of course, the colors white and red. I am really looking forward to wearing it on the field for the first time.”
What are your general thoughts about your upcoming time in Stuttgart?
Lazar Jovanovic: “I'm really looking forward to it. It's an exciting time for me. This will be the first time I'll be playing for a club away from home, which is something special. You called it: at the age of 18 you left your home country and you ventured abroad for the first time. Why is that a bit difficult for you?
Lazar Jovanovic: “Of course this is something new for me, but I look forward to the adventure. My father comes to Germany with me for the first few weeks, making it easier for me to settle.
Do you already know some players at VFB?
Lazar Jovanovic: “I don't really know the boys personally yet, but I followed VFB's games on TV and via Stream. For example, I have paid a lot of attention to the attacking players, and the way they work in their positions. And I am sure I have received all the boys in the near future.
Why did you choose VFB and the Bundesliga?
Lazar Jovanovic: “The Bundesliga is one of the five strongest competitions in the world. It is a dream to be able to play and further develop here. That is a huge motivation for me. VFB recently paid a lot of attention in the Champions League: the team that was a lot of attention to it. Went for VFB in a completely different direction.”
When you were 16, you made your professional debut in the Serbian First Division. What memories do you have about that?
Lazar Jovanovic: “In the beginning it was very difficult, especially on a physical level. In the duels I was faced with many older players who were much more robust. However, this helped me to develop quickly: I have learned that I always have to be a step forward to prove and improve mental and robust players.”
Many VFB fans have not seen you play yet. How would you describe your playing style?
Lazar Jovanovic: “I like to be active in attack, use my speed and always find solutions – whether it is dribbling, running or passing. I try to set up or even score my teammates. My goal is to become an attacking player.”
