Chelsea Defender Malo Gusto says it was so hot in their semi -final from their club World Cup that they had trouble breathing. The burning temperatures in the Metlife Stadium reached more than 100 degrees at Pitch level and the players were given regular hydration breaks.
But it was also an eye-opener prior to the World Cup of next summer with a storm warning also in place because there was thunder and lightning immediately after the game.
Gusto says it was difficult during the tournament and the weather played a major role because Chelsea's last 16 draw with Benfica was delayed for almost two hours due to storms.
France International Gusto said: “It is so difficult on the field, it was difficult to breathe and we are happy to get through and continue.
“It is complicated to play in these types of conditions. It happens, it is for all teams. The most important thing is that we have done the work tonight and we will try to win this final and win the trophy.
“The US is always good. We are used to coming here in the preseason. We know that it is a different climate, a different energy. It is up to us to end with it and to give our best. We must remain focused on ourselves and keep our plan and give everything.”
Gusto admits that Chelsea is confronted with a difficult final and will be underdogs in the Metlife on Sunday, but they are determined to end the job.
It is difficult to say exactly how many clubs have earned so far, because nobody knows their “basic income” when they enter the tournament that is assessed on success, income and club size.
Chelsea has earned much more than £ 60 million – possibly up to £ 80 million – but the winner will receive a £ 97 million jackpot for lifting the trophy on Sunday.
Gusto added: “We are always improving. It doesn't matter to whom we are confronted in the final. We just want to win everything and make sure we win and then try to win the trophy. It will be very complicated in the final, but if we do our jobs, we believe that we can win and pick up the trophy.”
Gusto also paid tribute to two target hero Joao Pedro, who received both goals at his first start for Chelsea, only a few days after he had connected a £ 60 million deal.
He added: “Top talent, everyone knows and we have many top players as everyone knows, but the most important thing is to create a team atmosphere, a strong understanding and a good team spirit.”
