The defeat of the United States in the Gold Cup final against Mexico denied head coach Mauricio Pochettino a triumph for trust with a new-look team.
USMNT fell in a more experienced Mexico team in Houston last weekend, but Mauricio Pochettino achieved the positive points of the performances of some lesser-known stars.
This week Pochettino repeated that message during a podcast shared by US Soccer. In an interview with former American international Alejandro Bedoya, the Argentinian coach acknowledged that he enjoys his time in the United States. The team was well received where they traveled, but he did it for a little more of the fans to connect to the team.
Pochettino said: “I am in love with the US and the culture, the cities and every place where you can enjoy being with the people. I think it was incredible. St. Louis was incredible to the game, Minneapis, Chicago, New York, Austin, Dallas.”
“I think that in every place we have been, people have been good, very hot, I think we should encourage our fans to follow the team more, the team needs the fans, so please go to the stadiums, that is very important for the players,” Pochettino explained.
Pochettino continued in that sense and explained the importance for him that the fans were present at Games, pointing out that the team could be 'not to stop' on the way to the World Cup.
“We have to convey the fans the emotion we feel when we play. And I think the most important thing can happen, of course, is when we leave with the trophy, incredible.”
“But I think that because of the potential of this country, in everything you propose and proposes the United States, it is incredible because you will achieve it. I think it is to really understand what it means to be a football fan, what that sport means for the player to feel the support of the fans.
“My wish is that people have the same passion that this team and we feel for football. I think that is what we want to build on the World Cup, and after the World Cup, I think that will be the best reward for everyone,” Pochettino added.
