Atletico Madrid is expected to be on the market for at least two more signing sessions once the arrival of Johnny Cardoso is confirmed. A leading middle behind is being sought, as well as a replacement for the recently emitted Angel Correa. Funds may need to be collected to afford both, and they can come through the sale of Conor Gallagher.
Gallagher came to Atleti from Chelsea last summer, but his first season in the Riyadhair Metropolitano was not easy. He has trouble nailing a normal starting spot and often he is used outside of his regular central midfield position.
Nevertheless, Diego Simeone wants to keep Gallagher, but with the interest in his services that have grown in recent months, Atleti are willing to give the green light – provided that their asking price is reached.
According to the prison, Atleti wants at least € 45-50m for Gallagher, which paid to Chelsea about 12 months ago. Newcastle United would be interested in bringing the English international back to the Premier League, with Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest also sharp.
Losing Gallagher would not be ideal for Atleti, but he is not a necessary player. The arrival of Alex Baena means that he will play less on the left side of midfield, and in the middle of the park he will probably sit behind Pablo Barrios and Johnny – although the expected sale of Rodrigo de Paul to Inter Miami will mean that he will be familiar with.
And it is this detail that is crucial. Atleti cannot afford to lose the Paul and Gallagher, although they would have considerable money to replace both if they would leave in the coming weeks. For now it is still to be seen how the situation is going on with the last one.
