Former MLS Newcomer of the Year signs for Atlético Madrid

The offers outside the season continue for Atlético Madrid while they want to renew their team after a disappointing season 2024/25.

The Spanish giants seem to sell to sell Rodrigo de Paul to Inter Miami, but they have agreed to catch up with his international teammate, Thiago Almada. The 24-year-old Argentin is from Botafogo, although he loan half of last season in Lyon in Ligue 1. The athletic reports that the deal is closed, with only a player who still has to be completed.

The attacking midfielder had a detour to Madrid and started his career at Vélez Sarsfield before he signed for MLS Team Atlanta United. He spent three seasons with Atlanta and won the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award in 2023. In July 2024, Almada moved to Botafogo with a value of $ 21 million, with another $ 9 in potential add-ons.

He has played ten times for the Senior National Team of Argentina and scored four goals. Almada was part of the team that won the World Cup in 2022. In addition, he became the first active MLS player to win the World Cup.

During his short enchantment with Botafogo, Almada helped the Brazilian giants to the Serie A title and the first Copa Libertadores Triomf in club history.

Almada has the chance to make contact with some of his international teammates in the Spanish capital. Julián Álvarez and Nahuel Molina are both important players for Atlético and head coach Diego Simeone is another icon of Argentinian football.
