Atletico Madrid signed the American midfielder Johnny Cardoso of Real Betis on Wednesday for a reported 25 million euros.
“Our club and real betis have reached a deal for the transfer of the midfielder … which will be wearing red and white for the next five seasons,” Atletico said in a statement.
Born in New Jersey, the 23-year-old is an American international, but is of Brazilian descent and has an Italian passport so that he can be registered as an EU player.
On Tuesday, Atletico confirmed the arrival of the 24-year-old Argentina striker Thiago Almada of Brazilian Zij Botafogo.
The side of Diego Simeone also brought playmaker Alex Baena from Villarreal and Matteo Rugeri from Atalanta earlier this summer while they rebuild their team after a disappointing campaign 2024-2025, which they ended with empty hands.
