Man Utd told to sign £34m ex-Chelsea star who could be forced out due to Brexit

Manchester United -Baas Ruben Amorim wants to sign a new midfielder this summer and the Red Devils are encouraged to take a step for Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid

Manchester United has been encouraged to sign former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer. United hopes this season to bounce back from their worst Premier League campaign, which ended 15th last season.

They have already signed Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon and are set to close a deal for Bryan Mbeumo, but Mirror Football understands that Ruben Amorim also wants to sign a new midfielder after he has admitted that it is a point of care.

Speaking after United's 0-0-sign game with Leeds United in the preseason, Amorim said: “The holes between our sectors were sometimes too big. We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park and you can feel that it is difficult to win and bring the ball. But we have made the chances.”

And former United -midfielder Gordon Strachan believes that Gallagher would be an excellent addition. “Man utd doesn't need anything anymore, they have legs, real legs, really close,” Strachan told Olbg.

“Can Conor Gallagher do that? Yes, he can, he has absolutely legs, he is a good teammate. Does he have enough imagination? I don't know, but if you have such people there and have a imagination around them, he would be a good signature.

“The days of the luxury player, if you want to be a top, have disappeared. So, Conor Gallagher certainly has the legs. He has the robustness. Did he get goals?

“Does he have that flair? These players are hard to find. Would I take him with me compared to some of the players who have played at Man Utd in recent years? Yes, I would do that.”

Gallagher though the Chelsea academy and left the club in 2024 and joined Atletico Madrid in a £ 34 million deal. The midfielder enjoyed an impressive first season in Spain, where he was one of the three non-EU players next to Samuel Lino and Nahuel Molina.

Spanish clubs may only have three players without EU citizenship in their team and the move of Thiago Almada from Botafogo this summer means that they now have four. As a result, the Spanish Outlet Cope report that one of Gallagher, Lino and Molina will leave.

However, Mirror Football understands that Atleti boss Diego Simeone wants to keep Gallagher in the club, and of the three he is the most use in the first team. But Atletico also investigates whether they can use Gallagher's Irish heritage to have him count as an EU player.

Atletico has already had a busy summer, signed Almada, Clement Lenglet, Juan Musso, Matteo Ruggeri, Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso and sold Rodrigo Riquelme and Angel Correa. Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel and Reinildo Mandava also left after their contracts have expired.
