Former president of the Royal Spanish football federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales has received some positive news in the ongoing investigation into his activities related to the Spanish Supercup. A deal agreed to take the Spanish Supercup to Saudi Arabia is being investigated for suspicions about the involvement of Rubiales and Gerard Pique in mediating the deal.
The public prosecutor has accused Rubiales of business corruption, money laundering and corruption for some of his activities while he presents football in Spain. The deal to bring the Supercup to Saudi Arabia in 2019 was worth a total of € 40 million for the RFEF, of which the company of ex-Barcelona Pique Kosmos earned € 4 million for commissioned. During speech notes between the two that were leaked, Pique urges Rubiales to ensure that the Saudi Public Investment Fund gets their money to cosmos.
As reported by Europe Press, the defense for Rubiales presented the findings of a tax investigation carried out by the National Tax Office on its income between 2020 and 2022. The tax office found no irregularities or unusual income about his tax return, and the Rubiales lawyer presented to the Investigation Agency.
The last update about case was with regard to Pique. The former Spain defender testified on the file in April, defended his innocence and broke into tears as he complained about the toll who took on the investigation of him and his reputation.
This is one of the three legal affairs that Rubiales has opened, with another investigation into his granting contracts during his time as RFEF president who is also viewed by the authorities. Earlier this year, he was convicted of sexual harassment for kissing Jenni Hermoso without her permission, and fined for it, but Rubiales and the prosecution appealed the case.
