Atletico Madrid reach agreement for second defender as deal with Chelsea advances in €70m splurge

Atletico Madrid continues with their free spending summer, with more additives in defense to strengthen their ranks. Negotiations with Chelsea for Renato Veiga have been unveiled during the weekend, but now they are moving for the former David Hancko target.

Veiga, 21, has given the green light to a move to Atletico, with the versatile Portuguese defender seen as an addition with a lot of potential. ESPN says that Chelsea and Atletico will meet in the coming hours to complete a deal. The most important difference is that the requirements of € 40-45 million that Chelsea has set, while Atletico is not looking for the € 40 million. It is expected that good relationships between the two will see the deal to completion.

Another of the defensive goals that has been on the radar of Atletico since January 2024 is Feyenoord and Slovakia defender David Hancko. He was completely ready to complete a move of € 35 million to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. In a bizarre turn of events, however, Hancko was refused access to their training camp in Austria, where Al-Nassr made it clear that he was no longer welcome.

While the news about Hancko's collapsed movement spread, Atletico began to move. Reports emerged early on Tuesday that Atletico was working on a deal for Hancko, reported for the first time by ADN. Now the Italian journalist Luca Bendoni reports that a rough deal has been concluded between Atletico and Feyenoord, with a fee of € 32 million and an extra € 3 million in variables.

The formalities of the agreement will be completed, but these are expected to be completed. Hancko has already agreed personal conditions with Atletico – there was a movement to be made last summer, but a difference of € 5 million between the clubs stood in the way of an agreement. If Atletico completes the deal, this would take their total expenses to € 150 million this summer, before it takes into account variables or the Veiga deal.
