Earlier this month the US president watched while Chelsea won a surprising 3-0 win against PSG, with Cole Palmer scored a brace in the Metlife Stadium.

Then Trump was on stage – handed medals to the players – before he passed the club World Cup trophy and stayed on stage when the side lifted the title.

Many fans remained stunned by the incident and that also extended to some of the Chelsea stars – who did not consciously seemed that Trump would be on stage.

Now, however, Trump's, however, has lifted the lid about the situation, however, and claimed that the US president had been invited by the team to participate in the festivities.

Speaking with BBC Sport, Eric said: 'Listen, he is the commander -in -chief of the United States of America.

'The winning team invited him to stage because they said it would be the greatest honor of their lives if the President of the United States could present the club World Cup trophy.

“And by the way, I was there, I looked at it. The place went crazy. And there is no one who has done for sport than he does.

Although he claimed that Chelsea was aware that Trump would be on stage for the trophy lift, the amazed faces of some of their players said differently at the moment.

In particular, the English Ster Cole Palmer was left in astonished by Trump's presence on stage and seemed to pronounce it: “What does he do?”

The English football star later expressed his confusion and confirmed that the president's participation was completely not planned.

“I knew he would be here, but I didn't know he would be in the stands when we lifted the trophy, so I was a bit confused, yes,” he said.

Trump had previously awarded Palmer the Golden Ball Award with the 23-year-old midfielder who looked a bit stunned during that presentation.

In the meantime, Chelsea -defender Marc Cucurella admitted that he was 'scared' by Trump when the American president joined their club World Cup lift.

Cucurella said to the Spanish press: 'We were told that Donald Trump would generally come to present us the trophy and that we could not lift it until he left.

'And of course we were all waiting for him to leave, but the man did not want to leave, and moreover we looked at him and he said:' Go on, I will stay here, and so on. '

“And I wondered who would say something to him, you know … I was scared S *** less!”

Trump and wife Melania had kicked off at the Metlife Stadium in the nearby Teterboro airport at the presidential marine helicopter about 35 minutes before the kick -off.
