Niclas Fullkrug came from the bank to get a well-placed winner when West Ham came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 in the Premier League Summer Series.
West Ham almost had the game almost against an Everton side that was still struggling with defensive absence, and eventually got their righteous reward for their possession of dominance.
The impact of a full preseason under Graham Potter was clearly from the kick -off in Chicago with the hammers determined to try to play their opponents and often willing to take risks with their passes.
But the risk that the young defender Kaelan Casey took for the opener of Everton was purely one of a concentration course, because his square pass on the half line was performed by Harrison Armstrong.
He ran through before he freed Gana Gueye, whose low effort was left cheaply under his glove by Wes Froationham.
That would not be the worst goalkeeping error of half, because a harmless diagonal broke the gloves of the new Everton -Keeper Mark Travers when he came to hit and was friendly to Lucas Paqueta for the level.
West Ham made seven changes during the break and immediately stepped up their dominance, with Fullkrug that shot the winner home with a placed finish from a tight corner 20 minutes in the second period.
Everton's summer striking arrival Thierno Barry showed short glimpse to give hope at a potential level, but it never came, with a Charly Alcaraz head ball, the toffees came closest to their first points of the summer series on the board.
Analysis: it's just a season – but Everton is 'wrestling'
Sky Sports' Ron Walker:
“The campaign for Everton's season was hit by defense injury backs that have influenced their preparations, but two goals in four games, one of those who at the fourth level Accrington Stanley should be greater care.
“A pinch of salt is always required in friendly competitions, but the toffees look limited in the future. Playing with a low block and a five-man defense against West Ham caused his own problems to go up the field and past Gueye's Opier and a few half chances after the break they had little to see about 90 minutes in Chicago.
“Moyes himself said that Everton 'struggles' to take extra bodies in which there is an extra concern. Harrison Armstrong was their most dangerous threat on Wednesday evening with a few direct runs and a nice assist for Gueye's goal. But when West Ham came around the ball with increasing regularity, it was much more difficult to distinguish the patterns of the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game in the game.
“It was not helped by a lack of individuals with the obvious quality that was needed to take a game through the neck of his neck. At one point, Everton had the second best probability conversion of someone in the Premier League since the return of Moyes, and that would never be sustainable.
“The most important reservation is that with Charly Alcaraz behind Beto and a settled rear four, Everton to look more capable. But whatever new signing sessions arrive, and the existing team in the Hill Dickinson Stadium, the real test will be how fast they can pick up with their opening weekend trip to Leeds, live on Monday evening, now 19 days.”
