UEFA Champions League format explained

Prior to last season's competition, there was a major overhaul of the Premier competition of UEFA, and indeed all continental cups in Europe. Beyond are the days of the group of 32 teams group stage with Polish-one competition phase of 36 teams has replaced that format.

This season, just like the latter, each of the 36 teams plays eight games. At the end of the competition phase, the top eight automatically qualifies for the round of 16, while the lower eight are eliminated and do not fall to the Europa League.

In the meantime, the teams that end between the ninth and 24th are in the Knock -Out Playoff round to decide which will continue to complete the round of 16. The last draw for the knockout phases takes place after the Knock -Out Play -Ooff Round.

The round of 16 sees the top eight (placed) teams drawn against the other (non -seeds) teams. The quarterfinals, semi -final and the latter follows according to the typical cup matches.
