“I’m going to” – Frenkie de Jong confirms Barcelona contract plans

Barcelona is not expected to sign more first team players this summer, but their sports department will still be very busy. Sales are needed to register the new additions at La Liga, while there are plans for current stars to offer new contracts – and among them is Frenkie de Jong.

Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia are both in the last phases of expanding their respective stay in Catalonia, and although De Jong is lagging further, there is trust that he will eventually sign a new contract. However, there are some doubts that have arrived, given that he has less than 12 months about his existing deal.

It has been reported that in principle an agreement has already been reached, with the idea that De Jong will register until 2028. And the man himself has now confirmed his intention to renew, according to MD.

“I haven't renewed yet, because otherwise you would have seen it. But I am very happy in Barça and what Barça knows with me, so in the end I will renew.”

12 months ago it was taken for granted that De Jong Barcelona would leave at a certain stage before 2026. However, he turned his fortunes since the beginning of 2025, and he has shown how important a player is for Hansi Flick.

Although he is a member of Flick's Gala XI, there is a chance that De Jong will not play that often during the 2025-26 campaign as in the second half of last season. Marc Casado remains his competition, but both will now also have to contend with Marc Bernal, who is expected to return from an ACL injury in the coming weeks.
