Girona are now on the brink of elimination from this season's Champions League at the league stage. Michel Sánchez's side suffered their fifth defeat in six league games as they lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool.
The first half was littered with chances for both teams. Liverpool missed two thanks to former Almeria striker Darwin Nunez, while Daley Blind denied a glorious chance for Girona when he fired a shot from just a few yards out.
Ultimately it was Blind and Girona who had to pay when Liverpool struck at the decisive moment in the second half. Luis Diaz was fouled by Donny van de Beek in the penalty area, allowing Mohamed Salah to score the only goal of the match from twelve yards out.
Girona remain 30th in the league standings after that result, although they will undoubtedly drop out of the rankings by the end of MD6.
