Why isn’t Kane playing for Bayern against Shakhtar today in Champions League?

Kane has scored five goals in five UCL games in the league stage but will not add to his tally on matchday six against Shakhtar.

Bayern Munich's competitive phase in the 2024/25 Champions League is not going to plan so far, with away defeats to Aston Villa and Barcelona leaving them outside the top eight after five games. This puts extra pressure on the sixth matchday against Shakhtar Donetsk, in which they are without star striker Harry Kane.

The England captain has been scoring goals for fun since moving to Germany in the summer of 2023. In his debut season he scored 44 times in 45 games. This season his goals-per-match ratio is even higher, with 20 goals in 19 games, including five in five in the Champions League.

However, Kane will not increase his tally against Shakhtar. The 31-year-old was forced off the field with a thigh injury during Bayern's 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund on November 30, causing him to miss the DFB Pokal defeat to Bayer Leverkusen and the Bundesliga victory over Heidenheim.

The former Spurs striker has resumed training, but head coach Vincent Kompany has chosen not to risk him against Shakhtar in Gelsenkirchen. Attention now turns to Saturday's match against Mainz, although the Bavarians' six-point lead at the top of the table means they may not risk him until they are confident he has fully recovered.
