Legendary former AC Milan defender undergoes surgery on his lungs as club issue health update to worried fans

A legendary former AC Milan defender has undergone an operation on his lungs, in which the club has published an update for supporters.

Franco Baresi, 65, was a successful operation after a diagnosis of a lung nodulation.

However, the ex-Italy star requires further treatment.

Baresi is generally considered one of the greatest defenders of all time and spent his entire club career at AC Milan.

AC Milan issued a statement on their official website, with the text: 'AC Milan announces that, after routine medical checks, our honorary president Franco Baresi turned out to have a lung lump. It was decided that the best way of acting was to remove it with a minimally invasive surgical procedure.

'The operation went well and his recovery is free from complications. Franco has since been assessed by an oncology specialist who has recommended a consolidative course of immunotherapy.

'The entire board of directors, club management, employees and staff, the coaching team and all players for men and women at AC Milan Franco send their sincere wishes for a quick and complete recovery. Captain, we are all with you! . '

Baresi spent his own message to supporters while he said: 'Dear fans, I just want to let you know that it will take a little time to get back at full power.

'Thank you to AC Milan and all of you for your support. A big hug, with affection. '

A product of the club's youth system, Baresi made his senior debut for Milan in 1978 and remained until his retirement in 1997.

Baresi played more than 700 games for Milan and won six Series A titles and three European Cup/Champions Leagues.

He was part of the Italy team that won the World Cup in 1982, but did not appear at the tournament. Baresi was later a captain at the 1994 World Cup when Italy lost in the final of Brazil. In total he was covered 81 times by his country.
