Ballon d’Or 2025: Who has been nominated, how it is decided and when are the winners announced?

The Ballon d'Or nominees were announced before 2025 as the price for the best male and female football players of the year hots up.

Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Cole Palmer and Scott McTominay are the British players who are nominated for the men's prize, with five lionesses in the women's section – Lucy Bronze, Hannah Hampton, Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo and Leah Williamson.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have not been nominated for the prize in the men's Ballon d'Or. Last year the first time that the couple – winners of all except one of the previous 14 balloon d'Ors – was not on the shortlist for the prize.

There are also other prices for picking up in the September ceremony, including the Kopa trophies for men and ladies for the best young players -as well as the Yashin trophy for the best goalkeeper.

There are four Premier League keepers for the prize, because Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa De Trophy seems to win for the third year in a row. He is accompanied by Liverpool's Alisson Becker, Arsenal's David Raya and the Matz Sels of Nottingham Forest in the shortlist.

Chelsea and English goalkeeper Hannah Hampton stands on the shortlist for the Yashin trophy of the ladies

There is also double Arsenal display in the Kopa trophies by Myles Lewis-Skelly in the Shortlist of the gentlemen, with England hero Michelle Agyemang among the nominees of the women.

Chelsea and Liverpool have been nominated for the prices of the men's team of the year, with head coaches Enzo Maresca and Arne Slot for the manager prizes.

It is the same for Arsenal and Chelsea in the women's part of those prizes, in which English boss Sarina Wiegman joins Sonia Bompastor and Renee -Sloergers in the manager's shortlist.

When is the balloon d'Or ceremony?

The 69th Ballon d'Or ceremony takes place on September 22, 2025 in the Theater du Chatelet in Paris, France.

How are the balloon d'Or winners decided?

The shortlist was compiled by a group of journalists from France football who worked together with the French sports publication L'Equipe.

In the men's balloon d'Or prize, winners are determined by a voting system with one journalist of each of the Top 100 of FIFA-arranged countries.

Every journalist gives voices on their top 10 players from the shortlist of 30 players. The 10 players receive 15, 12, 10, seven, five, five, four, three, two and one point based on where they rank.

If players are tied to points, the one who ends the most first placed rankings of the 100 journalists at points. If that is bound, these are the second places and so on.

Journalists are encouraged to consider three factors in determining their voice:

The same process applies to the ladies Ballon d'Or, but only journalists from the top-50-arranged countries are invited to vote.
