Gareth Taylor appointed Liverpool Women’s manager six months after being sacked by Manchester City

Gareth Taylor has been named Liverpool Women's Head Coach less than six months after he was fired by Manchester City.

The 52-year-old takes over from interim boss Amber Whiteley, who stays in the club as an assistant coach.

Taylor, a former player with spells in City, Nottingham Forest and Burnley, was rejected in March by City after the team slid to fourth place in the Women's Super League (WSL).

City had started the season strongly under Taylor and was top of the competition, but a wave of injuries to important players such as Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp, along with a public fall-out with Chloe Kelly while the wing player insisted on a move, affected in the last months of his five-year term.

During his time in City, Taylor won the FA Cup and the League Cup. The team also missed the competition title and lost to Chelsea on target difference on the last day of the 2023–24 season.

He is now faced with an important challenge in reviving Liverpool, who lost star player Olivia Smith last month to Arsenal in a record-breaking deal with a value of more than £ 1 million-the first time that that barrier has been broken in the women's game.

They also saw Long -term left behind Taylor Hinds to Arsenal after her contract had passed this summer.

Liverpool finished seventh in the WSL last season, after he started the campaign with high expectations after a fourth placed finish the year before. First team manager Matt Beard left the middle of the season after a disappointing series of results.

“Everyone in football knows the history, size and potential of this club, and I am really looking forward to the task that lies in front of us,” Taylor said.

“Our goal is to create a team that supporters can be proud of, that play good football and that hopefully will bring success.”

Taylor's former assistant, Chad Gribble, will also become a member of the Reds as part of the back room staff.

The couple will take the lead for Saturday behind closed Doors friendly against Aston Villa on Bodymoor Heath Training Ground.

Liverpool starts their WSL season on Friday 5 September with a tough opening match against reigning champion Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The director of Liverpool Women's Managing Director Andy O'Boyle said: 'I am absolutely pleased to welcome Gareth to the club.

'This has been a very detailed process and it was clear that Gareth was the excellent candidate. He has a proven track record in building successful, identity -driven teams and his ability to develop players and to help them reach the next level is unparalleled.

'We want our team to play with a clear identity such as a Liverpool team and Liverpool -football plays for passionate Liverpool fans.

“Gareth shares that vision and we believe that he has the qualities and experience to deliver it.”
