The brave new world of Arne Slot suffered from a losing start when Crystal Palace achieved the community shield on penalties when Mo Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott all failed the place before Eagles Sub Justin Devenny sealed victory for the FA Cup winners.
Match report
It all looked so dreamy for the new signing sessions from Liverpool – goals from Hugo Ekitike and Jerome Frimpong and an assist from Florian Wirtz – but Palace fought back and bossed the second half.
Ismaila Sarr scored their second equalizer late, after the first half of Jean-Philippe Mateta had leveled it briefly.
Just south of £ 300 million, Liverpool spent after winning the Premier League with ten clear points last season – but Slot could not add a second piece of silverware because his red wilted in the intense heat.
And so it was again a glorious outing in Wembley in front of Oliver Glasner when the Jubilant Palace fans surpassed the Red Army, just when their Liverpool team had surpassed in the second half.
In total, five penalties were missed in a chaotic shoot – after Mo Salah had the opening effort, Dean Henderson from Subs Mac Allister and Elliott saved.
Unlike many versions of this fixture, it had been a good match, played at a good pace in a good atmosphere.
Palace fans spent large parts of the game singing 'F *** UEFA' and 'F *** Marinakis' while waiting for Monday from the Court of Arbitration for Sport on their profession against degradation from the Europa League to the Conference League on a technical property.
The forest of Evangelos Marinakis is the club that would benefit.
Liverpool's four selection framework summer signs – including former Bournemouth left back Milos Kerkez – were all in the starting line -up, while Glasner called his FA Cup final that started XI.
After a wonderful summer of sport, football was back in all its growling malice.
Wreaths were paid to Diogo Jota before fans of Liverpool carried out their traditional booing of the national anthem and then the planned silence for the tragic Portuguese attacker was demolished because of a few idiotic loud acids in the Palace end.
However, the competition itself was a pleasant romp – with Slot's new boys who proven an immediate hit.
With just three and a half minutes on the clock, Wirtz got his agile feet to work, twice Ekitike, who cut Chris Richards and shot a low shot past Henderson and in the distant pole.
The champions threatened to run Amok, five of them stamped on two palace defenders for a counterattack that had failed.
Then there was a cute interplay between Frimpong, Wirtz and Ekitike, who added a Saucy to the mix. There was no lack of fame about them.
Yet Palace, against the current of the game, is the same. Daichi Kamada released Mateta, who was artistically shifted by keeper Alisson, but the ball was worked on Ismaila Sarr, who was activated by an unusually clumsy Virgil van Dijk.
Chris Kavanagh pointed to the place and Mateta sent Alisson the wrong way.
It took only three minutes for Men to regain their lead and although he was a coincidence, it started with a brilliant long diagonal of Dominik Szoboszlai, releasing Frimpong on the left.
The flying Dutchman wanted to cross, but managed to erase Henderson and saw his efforts fall in the distant pole.
Kamada was soon forced by injury and replaced by Will Hughes – who skied an attempt from a Daniel Munoz Center.
After a thunderous start, the pace delayed in the stop heat.
But early in the second half, Ekitike shot high and wide from a neat Wirtz-afternations.
Palace gathered strongly, Eze with a shot that was smartly saved in the Near Post by Alisson while Glasner's men forced Liverpool to dig in.
Ekitike was addicted during the second half of the water break, Alexis Mac Allister Op – Slot sent Wirtz and Szoboszlai forward as a few false Nines.
Wataru Endo arrived instead of Curtis Jones and his first serious involvement was unintentionally injured Frimpong while he followed an approval.
And then 77 minutes Palace got the equalizer who had earned their second half efforts.
Adam Wharton chose a wonderful pass that Dommaked Liverpool and Sarr raced to fire the pole.
Soon Palace screamed for a penalty when Mac Allister treated a high ball in the Liverpool Box, but VAR was not interested.
Wirtz made way for Harvey Elliott, but the champions were under the Cosh.
Marc Guehi collapsed late at the cramp and his replacement shot Justin Devenny Wijd in the dying seconds after an artistic Eze Pass found him in space.
But Devenny made no mistake with the pressure fifth penalty for Palace, in the upper corner to win the victory.
