Lyon has announced that Center-Back Clinton Mata (32) has signed a new deal with Les Gones.
The Angola International Center-Back, which can also fill in as a right back, is now connected to the Ligue 1-side through a contract that expires in 2028. Mata had started his last contract year. The former Kas Eupen Youth Product was one of the most reliable defenders in Lyon last season and he was rewarded accordingly.
Mata came to Lyon from Club Brugge two years ago over a deal of € 5 million. He played 73 times for Les Gones. Lyon signed Casa Center-back Ruben Kluiser this summer, so both Mata and Moussa Niakhaté will have to fight for their place in Paulo Fonseca's starting XI. “Solid on the field, valuable, he has also established himself as a benchmark for the younger players, with the values of strictness and high standards that are expected at this level,” Lyon writes in their statement. Mata's Lyon kicks their Ligue 1 season away from Lens this Saturday.
