West Bromwich Albion 2-0 Coventry City: Frank Lampard suffers first defeat as Sky Blues boss

Alex Mowatt and Karlan Grant scored in each half to end West Brom's series draw with a 2-0 win over Coventry and condemn Frank Lampard to his first defeat as boss.

West Brom built a reputation as the competition's draw specialists after drawing 10 of the last 11 Championship meetings, but Carlos Corberan's side eventually managed to turn one into a win and end their unbeaten run expand to 12 games.

The Baggies put themselves in position for a first win in more than a month when Mowatt's deflected effort gave him his first goal since September.

West Brom have been up front having failed to win five times before this match and they had to weather a second half storm from Coventry to avoid history repeating itself again before Grant's strike sealed the points with 16 minutes remaining to send them back into the game. the play-off places.

Lampard decided to go with two changes after his first win as Coventry head coach, with Josh Eccles and Norman Bassette coming into the side for Ellis Simms and Victor Torp. Corberan recalled Mason Holgate to his starting line-up.

The visitors immediately posed the first threat when Bassette broke the offside trap and stormed into the penalty area, but Torbjorn Heggem's very last challenge saved the day.

Thanks to a bit of fortune, West Brom drew first blood in the eleventh minute.

Tom Fellows caused problems on the right and managed to get a shot away but the shot was blocked into the path of Mowatt who pushed through a crowded penalty area at Eccles and past Brad Collins.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto failed to connect with Ephron Mason-Clark's throw towards the far post and left West Brom off the hook.

Coventry looked all the more threatening to score an equalizer before half-time, this time a neat combination of play between Sakamoto and Bassette allowed Eccles to release, but he was denied by Alex Palmer.

The away side again set their sights on goal as Milan van Ewijk entered a teasing area, but Torp's header took the ball off the toes of Jack Rudoni, who waited behind him to fire into an empty net.

Coventry dominated the second half but could not get past Palmer, with former Albion striker Brandon Thomas-Asante sending a cross to Sakamoto, who saw his header saved at the far post.

Against the run of play, West Brom suddenly had a two-goal cushion.

Grant collected the ball deep in the Coventry area and a nice bit of footwork took three defenders out of the game before expertly digging into the bottom corner to give West Brom a much-needed three points.
