Match of the day that viewers had their opinion about the big changes in the show – but not all were impressed by the shaky debut of Wayne Rooney.
Mark Chapman presented the first edition of the new look BBC Highlights Program on Saturday evening and shares the hot chair with Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan.
Rooney, 39, was broken up as an expert in a panell member for the new campaign after his most recent management job in Plymouth ended in his looting last December.
The experienced Chapman had arrived to organize the competition of the day when Lineker was not available and also regularly the Sunday Show, competition of the day 2 at the front.
He was accompanied on Saturday evening by Rooney and Motd veteran Alan Shearer to start the new era of the flagship program, but viewers were impressed.
Rooney, who signed a bumper £ 800,000 deal with the BBC and was depicted in good spirits that arrived in the studio, was the target of special criticism.
One X user said: 'I'm going to say this now because it is said all season; I do not mean insult to him personally, but Wayne Rooney on Motd is a big mistake. '
Another was impressed by the standard of the discussions after the game, and added: 'Rooney's Punditry makes me nostalgic for the damp button.
“Great player, terrible analysis.”
Chapman, seen as a safe pair of hands to start the transition from Gary Lineker's long era, was largely praised after his first performance of the season.
“My goodness, what an upgrade with presenter,” said a viewer.
“Mark Chapman is the best in the company.”
However, not everyone was on board with the show that held on to the usual format.
“Instead of an exciting new #motd -format, just as I like Mark Chapman, this just looks like a Sunday evening,” an X user has posted.
Another simply said: “Not the same without Lineker.”
Chapman started the show with a brutal joke at the expense of Rooney.
During the opening segment he referred to the changes on the panel, but instead of speaking about Lineker's departure, he referred to the addition of Rooney.
Chapman said: 'Evening. The Premier League is back and the game of the day is back. You may have seen and heard that there is a big change in the show this season and that is that Wayne Rooney has joined us as an ordinary expert.
“Some things don't change. Alan [Shearer] Is still there. '
Lineker presented his last show at the end of last season. Despite the planning of the live coverage of the BBC of the FA Cup and the World Cup 2026, he left early after sharing a post about Zionism with an image of a rat that has anti -Semitic connotations.
The 63-year-old, the highest paid presenter of the BBC at £ 1.35 million a year and a large number of competition of the day since 1999, just said that it was 'the best for all involved' if he left completely.
