Viktor Gyokees was strongly connected to a move to Manchester United and a potential reunion with Ruben Amorim, but the striker eventually came to Arsenal
Ruben Amorim and Viktor Gyokeres will be confronted for the first time when Manchester United Arsenal organizes in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford. Gyokees spent almost two years playing under Amorim on Sporting, with 66 goals in 68 games in all competitions.
Amorim, however, left Sporting last year to take over at Old Trafford and Arsenal have now spoken about £ 64 million to bring Gyokees to the Emirates. The Swedish striker was strongly connected to a potential reunion with Amorim at United, but that was not extradited.
And according to a new report from the Daily Mail, United did not even do an approach for Gyokees because they believed that the 27-year-old had put his heart on a move to Arsenal. The report notes that United did not want to lose any other transfer battle after missing Liam Delap to Chelsea.
Arsenal -Baas Mikel Arteta would also be convinced after just one phone call with Gyokees that the player only wanted to become a member of the Gunners and United £ 74 million to get Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig instead.
“That's a question for Mikel,” Amorim said when he was asked about Gyokees prior to Sunday's collision. “Viktor is in a different competition, physicality is different.
“In Sporting they have a very good group of scouting, because we come from the players they can buy and then sell to survive. I think he is a very good player, he will give different characteristics.
“It will be different if we are confronted at the start of the game if we are confronted with Viktor or Havertz, for example,. So we must be prepared for that, but it is no surprise to view Viktor in a large club in England.”
Amorim is more focused on his own new attack, with Sesko accompanied by Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. When asked for his potential new front three, Amorim said: “First of all we have more than three.
“They are fighting for the places. I am really happy. I think he has a great potential. In everything he does. He can play different types of football.
“He will feel that the Premier League is really aggressive, he is going to learn, but he has a great potential and I can see that Ben is a striker for Manchester United for many years. That is why we have paid so much money to have a striker who will have his history in our club.”
