Gary Neville has encouraged Manchester United to sign a new goalkeeper after the mistake of Altay Bayidnir against Arsenal.
The Turkish Scotstopper started in the absence of Andre Onana when United published to beat in their opening match of the season on the side of Mikel Arteta, with Ricardo Calafiori on the way to the decisive goal.
Calafiori was able to nod in after Bayindir succeeded in beating the ball, but did not succeed in ordering his area and making it convincingly clear.
And United Legend Neville insists that the goalkeeper department is an important concert that must be tackled before the summer transfer window is closed.
He said on Sky Sports: 'There is a striking problem for United that cannot be ignored and that is that they have to find a new keeper. “They have to, I am absolutely unambiguously about that.
'I have 20 years of experience at United where there were two large periods of seven or eight years with Schmeichel and Van der Sar, and in between we had seven or eight keepers in a period of seven or eight years.
“It is really disturbing if you don't have a dominant No. 1 that owns his six-year box, that comes and hits and saves everything to save your points when your defenders make mistakes.”
Neville says there are two keepers who should focus United to solve their problems in the position.
He added: 'The two you look at who have been called in recent weeks are (Gianluigi) Donnarumma and (Emiliano) Martinez.
'The reason I say that those two good keepers would be for man United is not necessarily because I think they are the best keepers in Europe or that they are great.
'I think they have great personalities and characters. You have seen Donnarumma in a European final for Italy who save those punishments and look like a giant, you have seen him play for PSG in huge games under pressure.
'Martinez has won a World Cup, they played under extreme pressure and have great personalities and characters, the arrogance of a goalkeeper.
“They have to look the goalkeeper because they continue to admit goals and points and it undermines what they do.”
Bayindir came to the Fenerbahce club in September 2023, but was criticized for various high-profile errors, especially when admitting set pieces.
In the meantime, Onana, who was open to united this summer, participated in the training during the preseason, but was not considered sharp enough to start against Arsenal.
The United is supposed to have monitored Donnarumma and Antwerp Stopper Senne Lammens, but have not yet moved to Onana in the club.
Ruben Amorim revealed pre-match that Onana had not made the team because of the performances of the other goalkeepers of United during the preseason.
“No, he recovered,” Amorim told Mutv when he was asked if Onana was still injured.
“But the other boys did so well during the preseason, so I have to balance that.”
