Ex-UFC star shockingly questions referee stopping KO of the Year contender at UFC 319

Carlos Prates produced one of the best knockouts of all time at UFC 319.

De Ster 'Fighting Nerds' returned to the Octagon on Saturday evening with a first round Elbow Ko by multi -year competition Geoff Neal, one of the two rotating elbow knockouts in Chicago.

The execution put Carlos Prates back in the profit column after he had lost a decision from Ian Machado Garry in April.

Jason Herzog was the referee for the Welterweight fight and he stopped the match immediately at the last bell of round 1, after Neal had fallen through the elbow in the last two seconds.

Josh Thomson claims that Geoff Neal should have had the chance to recover at UFC 319

Unlike in recent fights, Herzog was not under fire before his interruption in Prates vs. Neal on UFC 319.

Neal fell on his back to the canvas and the referee started to cross his arms to indicate that the fight was over when the bell rang. Neal did not try to get up and then the competition remained on the canvas for a few minutes.

UFC veteran Josh Thomson pointed out that Neal had no chance to go back to his corner and to restore between the rounds, despite the clear impact of the KO -Klap at the end of round 1.

“So it wasn't an early stopping?” Thomson asked 'Big' John McCarthy about weighing in Podcast.

“The bell rang. Prates ran away. Now, the ref [should] Go, hey, walk to the corner. You have that, you have to give him a chance, right? Walk to the corner, “said Thomson.

“He waved it away before his back even hit the ground.

“There is a discussion,” Thomson continued.

'Don't look at him and go, the round is over. If you can get up and walk to your corner, let the fight take place. If, if I say, don't stand up, hunter. [If] You can't, fight is over. But he already waved it off.

“The referee is already over him and is waving out with the fight,” said Thomson about why Neal did not move after he was grounded.

“When I see that. When I see a referee doing it, the fight is over. So why would I move? He has just returned.”

John McCarthy defends the 'Great Stoppage' of the referee on UFC 319

No follow -up recordings were needed from Prates when referee Jason Herzog stopped the match at the bell.

“It was a great, great stopping of Jason,” old referee John McCarthy praised the stopping of Herzog.

McCarthy did not agree with Thomson's comments about the interruption and said Neal was unable to continue after he had fallen through prates.

“He didn't just go back. He closed his eyes because he was in pain,” said McCarthy about Neal.
