Joe Hart: Trafford’s progress in Burnley makes his transfer valuable for City

James Trafford impressed his city debut in the victory over Wolves.

James Trafford's physical and mental development during his time away from Man City brought his return to the club an excellent transfer decision.

That is the opinion of the former city goalkeeper Joe Hart, who thinks that his arrival only makes Pep Guardiola's side 'stronger', even when he arrived in a 'strange scenario' in the Etihad Stadium.

Trafford recovered the city again for £ 27 million after having spent the last two seasons in Burnley. After struggling in the Premier League in his first season, he bounced back with an impressive campaign in the previous term championship and helped the Clarets to promote.

Since then he has been promoted to the Senior Setup of England, who excelled at the age of 21, and many have the feeling that he could be City and England's number one in the not too distant future.

Trafford made his city debut in Saturday's 4-0 win over Wolves and saw calm and insured between the posts, which made Hart very impressed.

“He is a nice child and he is so hungry for it,” Hart told Match of the Day. “What I like about his career is that he decided to make a move to Burnley. It was a big money movement for a 20-year-old.

“It was a difficult season to go to Burnley. Vinny Kompany tried to play out, they were in the bottom three almost the entire season.

“But he remained strong, he remained brave, he could have been somewhere else, but he didn't do that and I just think he has developed so much physically and mentally.

“City had a return clause and knew what he was capable of and knew what his potential was. They borrowed him to Burnley, bought him back at a considerable price and it only makes them stronger.”

Despite the money spent to bring him back to Eastlands, Trafford is not guaranteed the number one goalkeeper.

Ederson missed the weekend trip with gastroenteritis, but Guardiola intimudes that he was remaining his number one keeper.

The Brazilian international, however, has been associated with a move to Galatasaray and he can be replaced by PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma if he eventually moves to Turkey.

Anyway, it leaves Trafford Scrapping for his place against one of the best keepers in world football, but Hart thinks that is a challenge that the 22-year-old will enjoy.

“It is a very strange scenario, but one thing I know is that he will go inside and if the number one will function.

“The one who is the other keeper, I think they will share games. They are in that unique position where they will probably plan 60 games in a season and they will share the role in the cups and the Premier League, but they will certainly have two keepers to move forward and he will be one.”
