A number of Tifos – large banners or coordinated flag displays – were unveiled in the stands during the first few days of Premier League promotion in 2025/26. Here football writer Ben Bloom explains what they are and collects some of the best.
The first few days of the Premier League season 2025/26 contain a number of remarkable Tifos.
Wolverhampton Wanderers brought an emotional tribute to their former player Diogo Jota, who died this summer, just like his brother Andre Silva.
Jota spent three seasons with wolves before he came to Liverpool. In anticipation of their match against Manchester City, Wolves fans revealed an image of the attacker who celebrated one of his goals for the club, in addition to the words: “We will remember if you walk in Gold in Fields of Gold.”
Sunderland fans marked their return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence by showing an image of the Lambton Worm, a local myth about a knight named John Lambton who kills a huge worm-like monster.
In the meantime, Aston Villa fans showed their admiration for manager Unai Emery, by showing his image in addition to the words: “no limits to our dreams”.
Nottingham Forest created a colorful mosaic to guide the words of the 19th-century nature conservationist John Muir: “And in the forest I will lose my mind and find my soul.”
In the meantime, after winning the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer, Chelsea reveals a new banner who reads “Champions of the World”.
