Former UFC welterweight champion boldly claims Jack Della Maddalena wouldn’t have been a top 10 fighter in his era

Jack della Maddalena surprised many people with his title -winning performance earlier this year.

With a huge defending defense immediately in line for the new Welterweight champion, it is expected that many people will pick him again.

Islam Makhachev apparently started his training camp for his debut on 170 pounds, where he will look at dethroning Jack della Maddalena.

Despite the dominance of the Russian at lightweight, it is clear that Della Maddalena is an opponent who takes the Makhachev team very seriously.

However, a former welter weight champion is not yet convinced that the current title holder is an elite hunter.

Tyron Woodley says that Jack della Maddalena would have struggled against the welter weights of his era

Although there may be several hunters who are higher than he was in the greatest welterweight of all time, Tyron Woodley still had a great career.

'The Chosen One' was able to record four defenses of the 170 pound title, with one of them a draw, before he lost the belt in 2019.

Georges St-Pierre may have left the Octagon in 2013, but the division was still full of a number of big names that all compete for the place of the former champion.

With that in mind, Woodley recently shared his thoughts about what a fight between him and Jack della Maddalena would have been if they had met during their career while speaking with Action Network.

'The Chosen One' replied by saying that in his opinion Della Maddalena would never have been able to challenge him during his era for the title because of the level of competition with which he would have confronted.

“He [Jack Della Maddalena] Wouldn't even have been in my sight. I would not have looked at him in the scope. He wouldn't have gone Carlos [Condit]. He would certainly not have come by Robbie [Lawler]. 'Wonderboy' [Stephen Thompson] Does better against pure strikers than all of us. His timing and his capacities, just to go into very quickly, he would have defeated him.

“I think he's a good hunter. I never take people away from people, it's hard to win a championship, just because there is so much pressure. But I can just think of ten people in my division who was the champion who would have defeated him.”

Tyron Woodley predicts that Islam Makhachev Jack della Maddalena would defeat, but would not have defeated him

Given where he would rank Jack della Maddalena against the hunters of his era, it is not surprising that Tyron Woodley supports the Islam Makhachev to beat him for the Welterweight title.

The former champion believes that, unlike 'JDM', Makhachev would have done well in the division while he was still champion because of his struggling capacity.

However, he thinks that certain hunters who were at the time, including himself, would have caused the Russian problems because of their ability to leave the battle and beat opponents.

“If you place Islam Makhachev against Johny Hendricks, he will be eliminated. You put it against me, I think he will be defeated and possibly disabled. Islam can do well against GSP [Georges St-Pierre]Because of the struggle, but just stylistically, the harsh wrestlers who were at the time, he would have a problem. '
