Amorim will be given ‘a reduced budget’ after ETH’s £200m-plus summer splurge
Ruben Amorim has faced his first hurdle as Manchester United boss as reports claim he will be given a reduced budget to work with at the club.
The Portuguese boss was in Manchester this week to adapt to his new job, having taken over as head coach from the sacked Erik ten Hag.
He met some of his players in Carrington and saw the sights of the city while the majority of his players were away playing for their country.
Although there have been rumors that Amorim would like to bring some of his former Sporting stars to Old Trafford, it now appears that will not be the case.
According to The Telegraph, Amorim will receive a reduced budget ahead of the January window, following the Red Devils' lucrative summer spending under Ten Hag.
Over the summer, the Dutchman brought in the likes of Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte in a spending spree of more than £200m.
The outlet claims that United chiefs are hopeful Amorim can get the best out of the squad as the club looks to end the damaging and costly cycle of mass overhauls.
In particular, club chiefs are hopeful the new boss will maximize the potential of Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount, who have struggled to find their best form.
Both players arrived in Manchester in the summer of 2023. Danish striker Hojlund has been heavily involved, but has only scored eighteen goals so far.
Meanwhile, Mount has made just 26 appearances for the Red Devils, providing just one goal and one assist following his £60million move from rivals Chelsea.
Mail Sport revealed earlier this month that United are considering halving the budget they hand over to their disabled supporters' association.
As part of a wide range of cost-saving measures, the £40,000 per year given to MUDSA has been targeted.
While no final decision is expected to have been made, United are reluctantly considering what could prove to be a highly controversial move.
Following the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS in January, officials began looking for areas of the business where savings could be made.
Should officials decide to go ahead with the cut, it could well be met with a hostile response from supporters after the Premier League giants announced record revenues of £661.755 million in June.
United are unlikely to be particularly active in the January transfer window unless an opportunity arises, players leave or injuries or other factors create a problem that needs to be addressed.
Amorim's first game as United boss will see him face Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon as he looks to help the Red Devils rise from 13th in the table.
The Tractor Boys could prove a tough task for Amorim after securing their first win of the competition during their visit to Tottenham before half-time.
