Arsenal has emerged as shock candidates to sign Girona defender Arnau Martinez. The 22-year-old is connected to an exit this summer, just like a number of Girona stars, but so far no side had made a strong offer.
Martinez has two more years about his deal, and after the exit of Miguel Gutierrez, the newest cornerstone of Michel Sanchez's side could be to continue. Napoli has been associated with a movement for Arnau as an alternative to Juanlu Sanchez, while West Ham United has also recently been cited as a potential destination for Martinez.
According to Santi Aouna from FootmerCato, Arsenal has made a bid of € 8 million plus € 2 million in variables for Martinez. The Catalan side is open to things this transfer window, because they are trying to renew their team this summer, but they can very well be tempted to carry out his release clause of € 14 million.
It is unlikely that they try to stand in the way, but the Gunners will be able to afford more than his release clause.
Martinez was one of the breakout stars for an exciting Girona side three seasons ago and operated as an attacking right back that stood out for his use of the ball. When a central defender came through the Barcelona Academy, Arnau often moved to midfield, crashed the box or hit the by-line, depending on what was needed on the Girona attack.
Arnau is not blessed with a great pace, is versatile and adaptable and has played in a rear three and also as a wingback. After his first outbreak, he was connected to Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, but after Yan Couto had appropriated him two seasons ago, that interest cooled a bit. With two more years about his deal, Girona can see it as time to cash him in before the end of the window.
