Man Utd conqueror is best friends with Rashford and came through the academy

A lot of talk was about the heroic deeds of Christy Pym, but there was still a Grimsby Town Hero with connections with the Manchester United side that they shocked on Wednesday evening in the second round of Carabao Cup.

The League Two-Outfit rightly defeated the Premier League Giants 12-11 on penalties after a normal time of 2-2-including a two zero lead.

And to rub salt in the wounds of United, the man who scored the second goal of the Mariners – as well as their ninth penalty in the shootout – came through their own academy and is good friends with Marcus Rashford.

Tyrell Warren was released by the Red Devils after 14 years in 2019, but his ties with former teammates can still be clearly seen in his holiday buttons with Rashford over the years.

This summer this summer included the duo that flew together and even participated in some training sessions to get fit for this new campaign.

Speaking of his friendship with Rashford, Warren described to Manchester Evening News, their bond from their Academy Days to Now.

'At the time, there were clearly a few of us, all the same ages, all from Manchester, from the same area in Manchester, who played for the same local teams in that area and district.

'So it was easy to join each other and get to know each other.

'He (Rashford) is to some of my games with the rest of my friends and it is interesting to see that he will still come and see his friends.

“He didn't forget friendship and it's all about friendship.”

Warren caught the attention of Jose Mourinho during his term of office in the Old Trafford Hotseat and was part of his first training team in July 2016.

The right side was 17 at the time and yet to make his first start for the less than 21s.

“It was crazy to be honest, it was crazy. I didn't really expect it. I came back from the summer and (Academy Head) Nicky Butt said that I was with the first team, with which I was a bit surprised. But I just had to go out and train and show what I can do.

'I learned a lot from Mourinho and the players, the pace of training, how hard you train. And I just took that back to the youth team and tried to do that in the training sessions with them. '

And he certainly remembered his former passengers of his talents on a historic night in Blundell Park.
