Anthony Gordon opens up about Liverpool goal celebration, his love for Newcastle

Anthony Gordon says speculation about his future has affected his performances but insists he loves Newcastle United and is desperate to win a trophy with them.

Newcastle suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat at Brentford last weekend, a few days after Gordon scored in a 3-3 thriller at home to Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The former Everton striker celebrated his goal by making talking gestures with his hands. As he met Newcastle fans to accept the Disabled Supporters' Player of the Year Award, Gordon indicated that talks about a move to the Reds were behind the goal last summer. celebration.

“I loved the game, I didn't need any more motivation for that game,” Gordon told Sky Sports News.

“The celebration was just that I had heard so much talk this year about my future, where I'm going, where I want to go without anyone asking me.

“Let me play football, I just want to be happy, play football. I love it here, I've said it many times, I think people assume with the speculation that it's all true if you've never heard of it from me once that I am unhappy in this place. I like playing football here.

Gordon added: “It has stopped me enjoying my football this year and I think that's where the inconsistencies (in performances) come from, because I've gotten a bit caught up in that.

“But I just want to play football for Newcastle above all.”

Gordon isn't the only Newcastle player to have reportedly attracted interest; Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are among the players reportedly admired by other clubs.

“I'm only 23,” Gordon said. “All I've heard is, 'When he leaves?' Who said I would ever leave?

“I'm very happy here, I love this place, I love playing football here and I think Bruno and Alex probably think the same.

“But we're all young, we're all human, so when people talk about that, it questions our character. It's hard.”

Gordon said nothing would come close to winning a trophy for Newcastle United.

“Everyone (in the squad) is in the same boat,” he said.

“If we can win a trophy for this club it would mean the absolute world. Obviously the league means so much to us because all our players want to play in Europe, we want to play at that elite level.”

“But for me, since I joined – and it probably always will until it happens – winning a trophy is the main priority.”
