Former England midfielder Danny Murphy has told Marcus Rashford that a move to Arsenal would suit him better than current club Manchester United.
Rashford has spent his entire career at Old Trafford, where he has more than 400 appearances to his name, but he has had a difficult 2024. He was left out of England's European Championship squad and United are reportedly willing to let him leave for the right price. raising money for head coach Ruben Amorim to expand his roster.
United are thought to want around £40million for the 27-year-old, who is one of several wide forwards in the unbalanced squad Amorim inherited from Erik ten Hag. Colleague Antony has also been linked with a departure, with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo receiving more minutes at the start of Amorim's tenure.
Arsenal also have quite a few options in wide roles, with one of them – Bukayo Saka – scoring twice in a 3-0 Champions League win against Monaco on Wednesday night. However, Murphy has urged Rashford to consider a move to North London if the opportunity arises.
“Playing in a team that is so stable, confident and skilled, it's likely that his end product would be much better because Arsenal are really dominant in games,” Murphy said on talkSPORT. 'There would be people who would take over Rashford [Gabriel] Martinelli.”
Like Rashford, Martinelli enjoyed the best goalscoring campaign of his career in 2022-23 before seeing his numbers decline. He has scored just 12 times since the start of last season, while Rashford has scored 15 in the same period.
“The ability he has and the physical attributes he has makes him capable of more,” Murphy added when discussing Rashford, arguing that “perception” has damaged the Mancunian. “But he was at a club where the managers and the management team were not stable, the team was not great.”
Rashford has traveled to the Czech Republic with the rest of the Amorim squad, where United will face Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday. The striker's only European goal this season came in a 3-3 draw against Porto in October, and the Premier League side can boost their chances of an automatic place in the round of 16 with a win.
Amorim was asked about January transfer activity ahead of the match in Plzen, suggesting that things are not entirely black and white. “I'm really focused on my players and understanding my players. I think that was one of the problems of this club. We have to focus on what we have, the Academy, and also on a clear profile when you get the players gets.” he said.
“There are a lot of details to manage. Every detail counts. You have to be very clear in the profiles, arrange all the processes and then go to that phase of buying and selling.
“We have, just like Ty [Malacia]international players who are good players and we need our time to teach our idea then we will see. This is a huge club, we have to improve as a team.
“We have to sort out a lot of things in our club before we just buy and sell players. Let's focus on improving our players, improving our Academy, and then we'll see.”
