Greenwood to be assessed, Shaw out until new year says City boss Taylor

Gareth Taylor said Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood will be assessed after being stretchered off during the Women's Champions League win over St Polten.

Greenwood was replaced by Laia Aleixandri in the 32nd minute after a heavy collision with Melanie Brunnthaler and was taken off on a stretcher at the Joie Stadium.

The England international's injury overshadowed the Citizens' 2-0 win on Thursday, as 18-year-old Lily Murphy made her debut by scoring the opening goal.

City's triumph saw them maintain their perfect record in the league, although Barcelona's win over Hammarby means they are still not assured of top spot in Group D.

“I was really happy to get the job done. It's no secret that we're a little short on players and staff,” Taylor began.

“Losing Alex [Greenwood] Halfway through the match we found it difficult to adapt. I thought we were a bit impatient in the first half.

“We picked up our pace, I always had the feeling we were going to score.”

Taylor was also able to provide an update on Khadija Shaw, with the striker ruled out of Thursday's win after picking up a problem in training.

The Jamaican, City's top scorer with 14 goals in as many games this season, is unlikely to play against Everton or Barcelona before the Christmas break.

Taylor also elaborated on the next steps taken with Greenwood, with the duo's absence only adding to the Citizens' recent injury problems.

“Not at this stage. I turned around because I was frustrated that we lost the ball. We'll just have to assess it, like all the other injuries we have,” Taylor said of Greenwood.

“We still have two games to play, we will keep an eye on Alex, but it will take a lot of effort for Alex to come out. Huge loss. It looks like we are losing big players.”

'Miedema, Lauren Hemp, Layzell, Bunny Shaw. If it's Alex, things are going to be very difficult for us. The girls are good in that respect.”

Taylor added about Shaw: “I'm not too sure, we've had multiple scans of the area she has a problem with, we'll have to wait to find out.

“I don't think we'll see her until the new year, which is a shame for us because she was in really good form.

“Hopefully once we get this break we'll have a bit of time and we won't miss these players for too long.”
