Gyokeres thinks two Man Utd stars could block him from joining Amorim

Viktor Gyokeres appeared to suggest Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund could stop him from moving to Manchester United.

With Ruben Amorim having officially taken charge at Old Trafford, the Swede has already been linked with a reunion with his former Sporting Lisbon boss. The ex-Coventry City striker has taken the world by storm with the Portuguese giants and was linked with a move to United when Amorim was still at Sporting.

He was particularly lethal in Amorim's last home game, as Sporting defeated Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League. Now that the 39-year-old manager has his feet firmly under the desk at Old Trafford, the rumor mill is turning even faster. Yet it seems that Gyokeres is thinking about the two sitting attackers at United.

In an interview with Fotbollskanlen, Gyokeres was asked if he could see himself at United. He replied: “They already have several attackers there, so we'll see.”

He added: “But it's not something I'm thinking about. Obviously I want to play at Sporting all season and I feel good there, I'm not in a hurry. We'll see when the time comes.”

Zirkzee and Hojlund have both left a lot to be desired since their respective moves to the club. Hojlund had a mixed debut season, contributing 16 goals and two assists in 43 appearances in all competitions.

However, having joined from Atalanta for a whopping £72 million, his first campaign could be described as disappointing. Meanwhile, ZIrkzee has struggled since his £36.5million move from Bologna.

After scoring a late winner in his debut against Fulham, Zirkzee has failed to get on the scoresheet again. It is clear that fans and pundits alike are not convinced that the Dutch international is the answer to United's glaring questions.

Gyokeres has experience of playing in England, albeit in the Championship with Coventry and Brighton & Hove Albion. His goalscoring record and reputation have soared since moving to Portugal. This season he has already helped himself to 23 goals and four assists in just 18 appearances in all competitions.

It's the kind of goal-scoring form that has propelled Sporting to the top of the Primeira Liga and second in the Champions League. Now that the international break is over, all eyes will be on the Swede to see how he fares under new boss Joao Pereira.

However, he is still disappointed about Amorim's sudden departure. When asked about his former coach, he added: “It's very sad that Amorim is leaving, but of course we understand his decision. He meant a lot to me because he gave me the opportunity and helped me grow a lot. Watch Now We look forward to working with the new coach.”

Amorim will take charge of his first game as United manager on Sunday evening when the Red Devils travel to Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
