Arsenal and Manchester United should avoid signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon because he is “not a natural finisher”, according to Troy Deeney.
The Swedish hitman has become one of the most sought-after strikers in world football following his plethora of goals over the past two seasons.
He has scored 69 times in 74 games since joining Lisbon from Coventry City in 2023 and has now been linked with big-money moves to United, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona. But despite his incredible numbers in front of goal, former Watford striker Troy Deeney has warned the two English clubs against signing Gyokeres in the near future.
The pundit believes Gyokeres still lacks the deadly instincts of a striker and does not think he has enough star quality to help either team win the Premier League title.
“You know if you say something, the clip will come back in six months,” he told talkSPORT. “I really think he's a good footballer, he works really hard, all that. But I don't think he's a natural finisher.
“And again, everyone is going to improve their goalscoring record, I understand that. But I don't think he needs either of those two to win the Premier League. That's just my opinion, and if he had, they would have done.” I already bought it.”
Both United boss Ruben Amorim and Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta are clamoring for a regular goalscorer like Gyokeres. United's £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund is struggling for consistency at Old Trafford, while winger Bukayo Saka carries the goalscoring burden for Arsenal.
Gyokeres has already responded to speculation that he could follow Amorim at United after the Portuguese coach got the best out of him during their two years together.
“Am I going to Man United with Amorim? I don't know, I'm here. I really enjoy being here, it's not something I think about. I enjoy it here. I'm sad he's leaving. We wish him all the best.”
