Harry Maguire is set for a stay at Manchester United after revealing 'positive' talks with club chiefs.
The Red Devils defender has just six months left on his current contract at Old Trafford and could be free to talk to interested clubs next month. A club option has been included in his contract to extend his contract for another season.
But Maguire, 31, has offered an update on his future. And while he hasn't confirmed whether he will stay, he did reveal that talks have taken place. After last weekend's win against Manchester City he said: “Listen, I haven't really thought about it. I still have this year to go, with an option in their hands.
“But yes, the conversations are ongoing and all signs are positive at the moment. The conversation I'm having is really positive.”
Should Maguire complete a new deal, it would mark a dramatic turnaround in fortunes. The English defender fell down the pecking order under former boss Erik ten Hag and even lost the club captaincy.
The defender was keen to leave the club over the past two summers. He came close to a move to West Ham in 2023, but an agreement could not be reached between the two clubs.
But Maguire has enjoyed a renaissance under new boss Ruben Amorim. He starred during the Red Devils' surprise win against Man City after being handed a starting spot.
And Amorim was full of praise in the aftermath. He said:[Harry] Maguire is perfect when you play with the three defenders. I think in the middle [he] it's perfect.
“Then the way the striker they have [ Erling Haaland ] You have to be very strong with the long balls and that was perfect for him. Not just Harry, all the boys defend very well.”
“They were very focused and that's the key to playing better. I think he did a great job and his teammates did a great job as well.”
Maguire, a 64-time England international, joined the Red Devils in a record £80m contract from Leicester in 2019. He went on to make 219 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his time. at Old Trafford.
Maguire will be hoping to get another chance in what is set to be a hectic week for the Amorim side. United take on Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Thursday, ahead of their clash with Bournemouth this weekend.
