Mikel Arteta has defended his much-discussed Arsenal trophy record, pointing to the two Community Shields and the FA Cup he has won since joining the Gunners in 2019.
The north London club will play Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday, with Arteta expected to field a number of young players such as Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
It offers Arteta the chance to end his barren spell as he achieved his two Community Shield wins in 2020 in addition to his FA Cup success.
When asked if he had won just one trophy in his five years at the club, Arteta replied: 'The Charity Shield twice too, right?
“So it's three (trophies). We need more. We want more and we want the big ones too.
'The pressure comes because we are at a big club. You want to do the best you can and that has to do with winning the big trophies, and that's what we want to do.”
He believes winning this match could have a bigger impact on more silverware.
He added: “I think so, I fully believe in that. The fact that you win, that you go to the next round of the competition, it builds, it creates something different within the team, that's why games like this are really important.
'Touching a cup, beating someone in the semi-final, beating someone in the final, it generates that energy and I think it creates the right path to do something else – especially because of the timing and when the competition is played. this country. It gets the momentum going.”
Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber are both injured but Declan Rice, who started in a 0-0 draw against Everton last weekend, is expected to be available.
