Substitute Danielle van de Donk's late move preserved Lyon's perfect Champions League record this season and continued their winning run against fellow heavyweight Wolfsburg on Tuesday.
Lyon are unbeaten in all competitions since last season's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona, but it looked like they would be held in a classic Champions League match for only the second time this season.
This match has been the final of this tournament four times, while Lyon had won the last five meetings with Wolfsburg in this match. A sixth win in a row came thanks to Van De Donk's winner in the 81st minute.
The eight-time European champions, who were already assured of first place in Group A, had to be patient, dominated possession but created little against a Wolfsburg team that would also certainly finish second.
That all changed with nine minutes to play when Kadidiatou Diani limped to the right and picked out Van De Donk with her low center. The delicate finish of the Dutch international, nutmeg, Marie-Joelle Wedemeyer on the line.
Wolfsburg's 6-1 win over Roma last week had given them the decisive upper hand in a head-to-head battle between the teams vying for second place in the group, but the Italian team pulled off a big bow by beating Galatasaray 3-0.
Alice Corelli's early opener was followed by late goals from Rosanna Ventriglia and Elena Linari as Gala finished without a point.
