Man Utd transfer news: Alejandro Garnacho update and ‘strong interest’ in PSG star

Manchester United will be a busy club – with income and expenditure – in the January transfer window following Marcus Rashford's announcement that he wants to leave Old Trafford.

It came after the forward was left out of Ruben Amorim's matchday squad to play alongside Alejandro Garnacho against Manchester City, with both players now linked with moves away from the club.

Amorim will also be keen to strengthen his squad for next season after an up-and-down start to his reign since joining from Sporting Lisbon in November.

Mirror Football takes a look at the latest Manchester United transfer news.

Amorim wants to keep Rashford

Despite all the speculation surrounding Rashford that his future at Old Trafford appears untenable, Amorim has urged him to stay at Old Trafford and help the club achieve their goals.

Rashford was clear he was up for a “new challenge” after seeing his career at Manchester United deteriorate, but his Portuguese boss said he already had a huge challenge ahead of him as he praised the striker's “great talent”.

“We have a new challenge here,” he said. “It is a difficult one, for me it is the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation and I have already said that this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. This is really a new challenge and the biggest. I really hope that all my players are ready for this new challenge,” said Amorim.

“Naturally [I want him to stay]because this kind of club needs great talent and he is a great talent, so he just has to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus.

“I was a player, we are a bit selfish and they are focused on winning their place in the team. So I don't think he has an influence on the team. It's the same situation as with everyone else, if they train well , then I have to make a choice and we'll see.”

Five European clubs are chasing Garnacho

Another player who could be out soon is Garnacho, who also did not participate in Sunday's 2-1 win over Manchester City.

The Argentinian has not been as impressive as last season and has only managed three goals and one assist so far this term. After being eliminated against City, he is said to have interest from five top European clubs.

According to the Daily Mail, Garnacho is no longer seen as “untouchable” at Old Trafford, with Bayern Munich, PSG, AC Milan, Real Madrid and Barcelona all chasing him.

The door to an exit for Garnacho is believed to be “ajar”, although interested parties would need to submit a bid of at least £70 million to even tempt United.

The European media are said to believe that United want to let Garnacho go for the right price and could be tempted to sell him because he looks like a homegrown star who could be sold for pure profit.

United “strongly interested” in Mendes

One of the players who could join United next month is PSG left-back Nuno Mendes, with the Red Devils reportedly having a “strong interest” in the player.

United are in desperate need of more cover at left-back following the long-term injuries suffered by Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw this season, with Mendes seen as a realistic target.

Sky in Germany reports that Mendes is still being pursued by United officials. It says PSG intend to extend the Portugal international's contract beyond 2026, but there are no indications he will sign a new deal anytime soon. Amorim has already worked with Mendes at Sporting Lisbon and appears keen to be reunited with the player.

Should United fail to get their hands on Mendes, back-up options include left-back Theo Hernandez and Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.
