Council say Barcelona still intend to return to Camp Nou in February
Barcelona hoped to be back at the renovated Camp Nou in two weeks for their 125th anniversary, but it quickly became clear during the summer that this would not be the case. The Blaugrana have postponed it several times, but some reports are casting doubt on whether they will manage to return home before the end of the season.
It is a matter of priority for the Blaugrana, who earn significantly less money while playing at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic, with some putting the figures at somewhere between €50 and 100 million per season.
However, Councilman David Escude, who is part of the athletic department, provided a positive update.
“The date given by Vice President Elena Fort at the last General Assembly, namely February, is the date we have. There is no change,” he explained to RAC1, as quoted by MD.
The renovated Santiago Bernabeu is temporarily unable to hold concerts due to noise pollution, but is also faced with complaints about traffic congestion. Some Barcelona residents have expressed similar concerns about the return of Camp Nou.
“We had a meeting to discuss everything. The neighbors explain the inconveniences caused by the work and together we try to improve them. It was an opportunity to improve access and mobility to Camp Nou. It is very intelligent on the part of the club to secure a few more dates, as we have already seen that there has been rain and that unforeseen events can happen, but the information we have is from February,” explains Escude out.
Montjuic is certainly a convenient location, as Barcelona can play in the same city, and not far from their current ground, without sharing it with anyone else. However, the difference both outside the field, in terms of finances, and outside it, in terms of atmosphere, is still large. Barcelona would certainly prefer to celebrate at home if they achieve victory in any of their competitions this season.
