Nike contract causes fractures in Barcelona boardroom due to uncomfortable questions

Barcelona announced a new sponsorship deal with sportswear brand Nike about a month ago, but deal figures for the deal have not been disclosed. Reports estimate the total value of the deal at around €1.7 billion, and Nike's contract will be extended from 2028 to 2038.

The secrecy surrounding the contract has been questioned by rival groups, with the club stating that they cannot proceed with some of Nike's confidentiality clauses. However, Radio Catalunya says that it is not only external suspicions that have arisen.

Their information is that the Barcelona board did not fully agree on the deal, and that there was tension over it. Notably, President Joan Laporta and Vice President of Marketing Juli Guiu did not leave things on the best terms, after Guiu asked Laporta a series of uncomfortable questions.

During Laporta's second term, Barcelona has seen a remarkable turnover in the hierarchy, with almost 40 senior directors and positions shifting over the past three years. Barcelona announced a General Meeting on Saturday where members can vote on the Nike deal.
